Thursday’s Meeting

By vuonganh1

The part of the class that did not go to the TAMFT conference met and did another literature search on therapy prep videos and client expectations in therapy. There was not much to be found. We’ll bring our articles to class next Thursday. We also worked on the script together and made the changes that were suggested by Dr. Bobele, and Dr. Slive on goal setting. You can see the document on buzzword under “Ordered Script with Spanish Translations.”

I made a few edits to what I believe was the most recent version of the script, the one called “copy.” I hope that was okay. :)

I downloaded this article from the library database, I thought it might be helpful. It pertains to audiotaped client preparation.

I’d send the link but I don’t know how, but here’s the reference in case anyone would like to look it up:

Bonner, B. & Everett, F. (1982). Influence of client preparation and therapist prognostic expectations on children’s attitudes and expectations of psychotherapy. Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, 11, 202-208.

Here’s another one I was able to download from the library:

Zwick, R. & Attkisson, C. C. (1985). Effectiveness of a client pretherapy orientation videotape. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 32, 514-524.

    Hey guys,
I was looking at the revisions we need to make on the wiki and wanted some feedback from everyone. I had put some of the interventions from our postmodern class notes and wanted to know how I should reference those. Teresa, do you remember the notes we created with Dr. Biever? I used those, but how do we reference these?
    Thanks.

I remember those from postmodern perspectives that we created in the chart but don’t know how to reference those. I remember talking about those in class as a group after reviewing the readings so i’m not quite sure how to use them as they are not original ideas, but they were described by us…

I don’t think we can use them without referencing where the ideas came from, which means we will have to trace them back to our readings from that semester.

Some of the abstracts and articles I found during our meeting last week were:

Gildemeister, D. C. (2004). Couple’s therapy: A video introduction. Dissertation Abstracts International: Section B: the Sciences and Engineering, 64, 4036.

    Johnson, R. H. (1981). Preparation for family therapy: A video-taped orientation. Dissertation Abstracts International, 42, 1177.

Shuman, A. L. (1998). Facilitating treatment utilization at a child guidance clinic: The effect of preparing parents for child psychotherapy. Dissertation Abstracts International: Section B: the Sciences and Engineering, 59, 2435.

Shuman, A. L., & Shapiro, J.P. (2002). The effects of preparing parents for child psychotherapy on accuracy of expectations and treatment attendance. Community Mental Health Journal, 38, 3-16.

The last reference is the only one I was able to find as a full text article. Maybe you guys can find full text for the other references.

These are the articles I found (in full text) somewhat helpful for our project. I discarded others that were more related to medical issues.

Weinstein, M. (1988). Preparation of children for psychotherapy through videotaped modeling. Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, 17(2), 131-136.

Strupp, H. H., & Bloxom, A. L. (1973). Preparing lower-class patients for group psychotherapy: Development and evaluation of a role-induction film. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 41(3), 373-384.

I have an article that talks about a study where the researchers incorporated a similar video to ours with their clients. they wanted to see if a video prior to tx impacted one’s level of anxiety, their expectations for psychotherapy, and evaluated the outcome at termination. the information is useful and the findings would strengthen our argument for the need for our video. don’t know if this is necessary now, but if not, we could use the information in the future should someone decide to write a paper about our video. i can summarize the study in detail tomorrow in class.
